How to behave with the new puppy…

The arrival

As soon as he arrives in his new house, the puppy will need at least one week to get used to the new reality: it’s a difficult moment, it’s feeling alone and with no reference, he’s likely missing his mom and brothers. Let him have a look around and take a look around the house. Don’t exaggerate with the attention you’re giving.

This is a sad but normal moment in a puppy’s life, if it weren’t you someone else would have taken him and maybe he would have ended up in worse hands 🙂 that’s how I lift myself up…

Treats

Food, cuddles and games are things that never should be lacking! Especially in the beginning.

Every morning it would be a good idea to weight the puppy’s daily dose of dry food and put away one third in a pocket to work on training during the day.

If you’re using treats, split them in half and use the ones specifically made for the puppy’s age, so that he doesn’t feel sick or gain too much weight or start acting spoiled with his food.

When and how to give out a prize
– Every time he’s not pulling the leash give him a kibble, even every 2 steps, if he’s not pulling (keep rewarding him if he keeps not pulling).

– When you’re eating and he’s laying down quietly
(Keep rewarding him, even a kibble every 2 minutes, if he keeps being quiet).

– When you call him and he comes

– When he brings you a toy

– When he keeps his paws off you!

– When he pees or poos outside the house

The reward or punishment must be handed out immediately, so that he can easily understand the association.

Name

Teach your puppy to respond to his name immediately. It’s a fundamental skill.

Start by being very close to him: call him and, as soon as he turns, give him a kibble.

Do this 10/15 times per day!

Day after day increase the distance from your puppy. If he doesn’t respond, take a step backward and work more on the previous level, until he understands his name.

It’s very important that he knows what is his name and even more that he learns to obey when called, especially building up to when you will start taking him out for walks.
