How to remove cat hair

Why do hair cling so much to clothing? A cat’s hair isn’t smooth but has outwards facing cuticles that become “hooks” tenaciously hanging to clothing.

First you have a low cost method, using rubber gloves, like the ones used for home cleaning. The ribbed ones (with stronger grip) are the best.

Wear the gloves, get them wet under the tap, shake off excess water and move your hands around the surface from which you want to remove the hair.

The hair will mostly stick to the gloves, those still on the cloth or furniture will be easy to spot and clumped for easier removal.

This same technique can be applied even on the cat once you finish brushing him or her. The dead hair on the cat’s fur will be easily removed.

I can’t vouch for the integrity of your hands, that’s up to the goodwill and likability of the cat.

If you don’t have rubber gloves, a big tough sponge will work as well. Use it top to bottom on chairs, cushions and sofas.

Second method is as follows: use one of the adhesive rollers made up of various sheets of adhesive materials that can be rolled over any surface. If you want to save, another low cost idea is using packing tape. Just tear enough to wrap your hand around with the sticky part pointing outwards. Then, just tap where you need to remove the hair to quickly catch them.

To remove really difficult hair from a carpet, sprinkle it lightly with water and brush it with a hard brush or a rubber brush. Wait for it to dry and then go over it with a vacuum cleaner.

(Since a few years, there are various vacuum cleaners designed for those who have pets at home as well).

A tumble dryer is another good way of getting rid of cat hair in your clothes, even a 20 minute drying cycle can solve the issues. After the cycle, the hair will be gone.

For furniture, a dust catching cloth is the best solution.

I’ll never recommend enough to brush your friend regularly: he will lose less hair around the house. Plus, his coat will be enviably shiny!
